 Applying Non-Skid To Your Boat

Materials

Methodology

Masking Tape
Dump Cup
Gelcoat
Fumed Silica (Aerosil)
Stirring Stick

1/8" Notched Trowel
1/4" Nap Mohair Roller
Acetone
MEKP
There are many ways to apply non-skid to your boat. This is a quick and easy way.

Mix fumed silica (Cabosil or Aerosil) with waxed gelcoat the color of your choice. The silica helps to thicken the gelcoat to the desired consistency. A little experimentation helps you to decide what pleases you. We shoot for the texture of mayonnaise. You know you've reached it when, upon slowly removing your stirring stick, the mixture forms small peaks on the surface. You're ready to roll!

It works well to apply an even amount with a small notched trowel with 1/8" deep notches. A little practice with UNCATALYSED gel putty and different mohair rollers, we use 1/4" nap, and you can get your non-skid as aggressive as you want. It is about one half art and one half science but it's easy to get good at. When you finally are able to get the texture you want, clean everything up, catalyze a batch of putty, and work quickly doing small masked off areas at a time.

Good luck and don't hesitate to call if you have any questions.
